I still remember when I first saw the trailer of Violet Evergarden. It was a visual feast. The anime community was going gaga over the sheer effort KyoAni has put into the animation. But oh man, it was a letdown story-wise. Violet Evergarden’s premise often switches between episodic and story-driven, which many anime have tried, but only a few succeeded, and Violet Evergarden became yet another example of the failed attempt.
However, even if the story was hit or miss, the characters and world-building were top-notch for the alternate Victorian era setting. Kyoto Animation once again proved why they are regarded as a top-notch studio with the masterpiece they have created in terms of animation and visuals. The music was also charming enough to match the story making Violet Evergarden a good enough anime.
