The anime is an adaptation of a light novel series written by Wataru Watari and drawn by Ponkan.
Synopsis: Hikigaya Hachiman is an introvert high school student with a pessimistic view of life. While he is good at studies, due to narcissism and no social skills, he prefers to avoid making friends. One day, Hikigaya’s literature teacher and guidance counselor learn about his rotten views of the world through an essay. Later she forces him to join the Volunteer Service Club.
