My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU (Oregairu) is an anime that turned out to be more than what a typical school rom-com genre should be. The best part where the series excels the most is that from the beginning, it starts with a rebellion against standards set by society while developing a full-on drama. Oregairu presents this by offering the characters with relatable social difficulties. The most remarkable quality of anime like Oregairu is how incredibly uplifting it is, making it both relatable and surreal at the same time while still retaining distinctive.
Synopsis: Hikigaya Hachiman is an introvert high school student and an outcast. But all this doesn’t seem to bother him, as he prefers to be a loner. But his loner but happy life soon comes to an end, after his literature teacher and guidance counselor forces him to join the Volunteer Service Club. The club helps other students with their requests and problems. He meets the beautiful and talented leader of the Service Club, Yukino Yukinoshita, who is very similar to Hachiman. Hilarity ensues, as Hachiman joins the club, which in turn develops an interesting teenage love comedy.
Oregairu is one of the most intelligent and realistic anime out there, with its undeniably good story and culturally diverse characters. If you are looking an anime for that little light inspiration that emanates from a “real” world perhaps a slice of life tale of school students tackling the trials and tribulations in school and society, then look no further. 01. Hyouka
Houtarou Oreki is an apathetic high school student who prefers a simple life and hates wasting his energy on anything. However, life gets turned around as his elder sister forces him to join the Classic Literature Club. Unexpectedly, he meets the ever-curious girl named Eru Chitanda, the only club member, who strangely makes Oreki join the club.
Houtarou’s best friend Satoshi Fukube and Mayaka Ibara later join them. Together they try to solve the 45-year-old mystery about the school. Being astonished by Houtarou’s talent, Eru requests him to solve more mysteries. And so Houtarou is dragged into satisfying her extreme curiosity to solve various mysteries surrounding the clubroom and its books.
Similarities: Just like Hachiman, Oreki also believes in living a loner lifestyle. But he gets forced into joining a club where he meets a strange member who makes his loner lifestyle difficult.
02. ReLIFE
Kaizaki Arata is a twenty-seven-year-old jobless man who quit his first job for personal reasons. However, it all changes when Ryo Yoake, a member of the ReLife Research Institute, approaches him. Ryo suggests him to become a test subject for the research institute.
Kaizaki has to participate in an experiment where he will take a pill that turns him from a grown adult to a 17-year-old young boy. The goal of the test is for Kaizaki to attend high school as a student for a year, experience his youth again, and start his life over.
Similarities: ReLIFE and Oregairu are similar in certain aspects, such as the plot of living school life to its full extent. Similarly, both Hachiman and Kaizaki suffer from flaws in a society struggling with their respective situations.
03. Classroom of the Elite
The Japanese government has established the Tokyo Metropolitan Advanced Nurturing School to nurture the nation’s future elites. School has given students remarkable freedom and rewards student points every month with a cash value of 100,000 yen. Students can spend the points however they want.
Kiyotaka Ayanokouji is a first-year student who just enrolled in this paradise-like school. He was assigned to Class 1-D, a class of substandard students, and is considered the worst class. Kiyotaka meets cold-hearted and unfriendly student Suzune Horikita, who’s determined to rise to Class A. Now, they must work together to beat the school ranking system to reach the top.
Similarities: The protagonists of this series appear utterly disinterested in everything but have a keen intellect and pessimistic vibe. The male main character is observant of situations around him. The female main characters have that cold and unfriendly personality.
04. Oreshura
Eita Kido has a dream to graduate from high school and attend medical school. He has vowed to himself never to fall in love after witnessing his parent’s divorce, which left him alone to live with his aunt.
One day, Masuzu Natsukawa, the school beauty with the silver hair, enters his life most unexpectedly. The only focus on his mind is to achieve his goal. However, Eita’s worst dream becomes a reality when Masuzu blackmails him into becoming her fake boyfriend.
Similarities: The main character shares the same kind of opinions as Hachiman about school life and denies anything to do with love. The MC also gets forced into joining a club, making his lives more complicated.
05. Welcome to the N.H.K.
Satou Tatsuhiro is a 22-year-old man who’s been a hikikomori for four years. In his recluse, he came to believe that his condition is due to some conspiracy. He blames a delusional evil and secret organization, N.H.K., for forcing him to be a hikikomori.
Satou wants to escape the hikikomori lifestyle and overcome the conspiracies of the N.H.K., but he is too afraid to go outside. One day, he meets Misaki Nakahara, a mysterious girl who volunteers in a charity project to help hikikomori. She claims to cure Satou of his hikikomori ways if he’s willing to become the subject of her project.
Similarities: Welcome to N.H.K. might not have a high school setting but is somewhat similar anime with social outcast M.C.s, dealing with the rejection of social standards. The main character receives a helping hand to once again participate in the real world.
06. ORESUKI Are you the only one who loves me?
Amatsuyu Kisaragi, aka Joro, is an average high school student. One day, he was asked out alone by the cool beauty upperclassman Cosmos and his childhood friend Himawari. While he was expecting a confession from them, but it turns out that they like his best friend, Sun-chan, and want his help to get together.
Confused by the situation, Amatsuyu reluctantly agrees to help both girls to win Sun-chan heart, hoping to date the one that gets rejected. However, another girl named Sumireko Sanshokuin, aka Pansy, suddenly confesses to him, whom Sun-chan happens to like. And things are only getting more complicated from there on for Joro.
Similarities: Unlike Hachiman, Oresuki’s main character has a friendly personality. The only similarity is that he pretends to be a nice guy but has a derogatory self-aware commentary about himself and others. The anime also does a wonderful job of making fun of tropes found in typical romantic comedy anime.
