Sometimes, dead is better. And it doesn’t even have to have a reason. The dead are just there with the unknown existence. The outcome is the same; the undead has risen, feeding on the living, their numbers grow en masse with each victim they bite. With no way to contain them or stop them, everything ceases to collapse. Seriously. It’s not a pleasant spectacle if it happens in real. However, what could be more captivating than watching these insane and highly contagious cannibals dominate humankind. Zombies which come from Haitian folklore, are most commonly found in horror and fantasy genre works. With its popularity in the West, they have penetrated their way into the Japanese animation industry. While horror is supposed to be an essential part of the zombie anime, this trope has started to take spotlight branching out to popular themes in anime, such as comedy, horror, romance, and all sorts of different genres.

01. Gungrave
Focusing someplace unknown, where mafia and monsters rule the land. A man named Brandon Heat is brought back to life as Beyond the Grave using forbidden science known as necrolyzation by a young girl named Mika. Brandon was betrayed and killed by his best friend, Harry MacDowel. Harry now rules the largest mafia organization, Millenion.
Upon his revival, Brandon Heat is on a crusade to avenge his murderer. The story of the anime also backtracks into the past where Brandon Heat and Harry MacDowel are still good friends. And how these two friends try to climb the mafia ranks in Millennion.
02. Gakkougurashi! (School-Live!)
Yuki Takeya loves her school so much that she doesn’t ever want to leave. She enjoys her life as a third-year high school student and club member of The School Living Club along with other fellow members Yuuri Wakasa, Kurumi Ebisuzawa, Miki Naoki, and their dog Taroumaru and teacher Megumi Sakura.

Now, as a newly born vampire, she begins to work as a member of Hellsing.
04. Sankarea: Undying Love
Chihiro Furuya, a teenage high schooler, has an obsession for the undead and likes to collect everything related to zombies. He even desires to kiss a zombie girl. One day Chihiro’s cat named Babu dies, he begins the process of creating a potion of resurrection using a book he found.
In the midst, he encounters Rea Sanka, who is thinking of committing suicide to escape from her predicament. Rea steals the potion meant for Babu and drinks a sample. After that, she falls from a cliff by accident and dies and thus becomes a zombie. The story follows the life of Chihiro and several situations following Rea Sanka as his new zombie girlfriend.
05. Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi (Sunday Without God)
God abandoned the world fifteen years ago. Which naturally left some adverse side-effects. New humans can no longer be born, and the dead can no longer die. Which means that if a human dies, they are not dead. The deads continue to exist as an average human, but they can never be at peace.
However, before abandoning the world, God appointed “grave keepers” and give them the ability to give rest to the living dead. So they can truly die and be at peace. Ai is one of these grave keepers who live in a world without God and is striving to find her purpose in life.
06. Koutetsujou no Kabaneri (Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress)
During the industrial revolution, a mysterious virus appears and rapidly causes a zombie outbreak which turns humans into Kabane and forces human settlements inside massive walls. The only means of transportation are massive, armored trains. Kabane can be killed by destroying its glowing iron-coated heart. But if a human gets bitten by a Kabane, then they are doomed to turn into Kabane themselves.
One day, a Kabane infiltrated train crashes into the city. Ikoma, who works as an engineer in the train station, was working on his gun to eradicate the Kabane. Ikoma sees this as a big chance to test his weapon, but unfortunately gets bitten in the process. He somehow manages to stop the virus and becomes half-human half Kabane called Kabaneri. Only the future knows what fate lies ahead for Ikoma in his current form.
07. Shikabane Hime: Aka (Corpse Princess: Aka)
If someone dies with strong feelings or regrets about the world, they become Shikabane, also known as undead. The existence of Shikabane is kept a secret from the people, and the people capable of exterminating them are Buddhists from Kougun Sect. Every priest has their Shikabane known as Shikabane Hime whose job is to guard the priest and kill off other Shikabane.
After being brutally murdered along with her family, Makina Hoshimura is now a Shikabane Hime contracted to Keisei Tagami, a Buddhist monk from Kougun Sect. Keisei’s younger brother Ouri after meeting Makina stumbles into a secret that Kesei has desperately tried to hide from him which leads to Ouri dragged into the world of the Shikabanes.
08. Highschool of the Dead
The world was suddenly thrown into a deadly pandemic which turns humans into zombies. The outbreak reaches Takashi Kimuro’s high school, where he had to kill his best friend, who was turning into a zombie. Takashi’s makes the final promise of helping his friend’s girlfriend and leaves the school.
On the way out, Takashi meets other student and the school nurse who venture out to find their family members and uncover what caused the zombie apocalypse. But what awaits them is the fallen society and dangerous fellow survivors.
09. Shisha no Teikoku (The Empire of Corpses)
Young medical student John Watson has illegally resurrected his deceased friend, whom he has renamed Friday. He then becomes obsessed with the work of Dr. Victor Frankenstein, the legendary corpse engineer whose research produced the only corpse to have resurrected possessing a soul.
In his pursuit of knowledge, John gets involved with M, a mysterious agent of the British Secret Service, which leads him on a hunt to find the lost research notes of Victor Frankenstein which holds the secrets to resurrects people and their souls.
10. Zombie-Loan
Michiru Kita is a normal high school girl with a strange ability named Shinigami eyes that allows her to see dark rings on the necks of people who are about to die. The blacker the rings are, the closer they are to death, and once it’s entirely black, the person dies.
One day, she notices that two students from her school have black rings around their necks but are still not dead. Later, she discovers that the two, Chika Akatsuki and Shito Tachibana are zombies who took a Zombie-Loan. They pay off their zombie loans by working as zombie hunters. Chika and Shito ask Michiru to help them hunt zombies and convinces her to join them.
