Since its release, the dark fantasy isekai series Re:Zero has acquired a little but notably faithful fandom. The series has created an immersive and appealing story that blends with dark-drama, comedy, and a cast of distinctive diverse characters. Re: Zero deals with time-travel, immortality, and transported into another world gimmick, which gives surprising depth to the plot. The series takes its time developing the setting and its characters while also keeping it overarching.
Synopsis: Subaru Natsuki is an ordinary high-schooler and NEET who spent his days doing nothing but play games. On one night, while returning from a convenience store, he suddenly finds himself summoned in a fantasy world called Lugnica. However, soon after his arrival, some thugs attack him, but a mysterious half-elf girl named Emilia saves him. To thank Emilia, Subaru decides to help her get the stolen insignia back, but instead, both get brutally murdered. Subaru then awakes again to find himself in the same place, with the same thugs, the same girl. He soon learns that he can checkpoint and go to a certain point by dying.
Despite all the appreciation, Re:Zero has been a turn off for some fans due to a slow start. But that doesn’t mean that it isn’t a good show. It become better as the story progresses, making it worth the time you spend watching the early episodes. If you are looking for anime with a dark undertone, then look no further. Anime Similar To Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World
01. Steins;Gate
Rintarou Okabe is a self-proclaimed mad scientist who rents out a room with fellow lab members, his childhood friend Mayuri Shiina and his hacker buddy Hashida Itaru. He is the founder of the so-called Future Gadget Laboratory. One day, they accidentally develop a time machine out of a microwave named Mobile Microwave.
The Mobile Microwave is capable of sending text messages to the past. However, Okabe and his friends soon learn that a secret organization called SERN has been researching time travel for some time now. SERN learns about Mobile Microwave and is now after them. Now, Okabe and his associates must use their knowledge to stop the secret organization’s possible hidden agenda.
Similarities: Steins;Gate is more of a sci-fi compared to Re:Zero’s, which is fantasy. But both series are similar as the main characters have something to do with traveling back in time to protect those they care about the most.
02. Boku dake ga Inai Machi (Erased)
Satoru Fujinuma is a twenty-nine-year-old struggling manga artist who works part-time as a delivery man at Oasi Pizza. Satoru leads a mundane life, but he can travel back in time before a dangerous event to prevent it. However, he cannot control it, as it triggers without his wish.
One day, Satouro gets framed in his mother’s mysterious murder. It triggers Satoru’s time-traveling ability, taking him back 18 years in the past to his fifth-grade class in February 1988. Now he’s an elementary schooler in Hokkaido and has the only chance to save his mother and prevent a kidnapping incident of three of his murdered classmates.
Similarities: The Erased anime sets in modern time rather than the fantasy one. The only similarity in both anime is that both main characters try to change the sad past and make things right with their time-traveling ability.
03. Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari (The Rising of the Shield Hero)
The kingdom of Melromarc summons Naofumi Iwatani and three other young men to become the Four Cardinal Heroes. These Heroes’ job is to protect the kingdom from the Waves of Catastrophe, which are hordes of monsters. Each hero receives a sword, spear, and bow, and Naofumi gets a shield that makes Naofumi the weakest among the heroes.
To make matters worse, his only teammate betrays him and accuses him of sexually assaulting her. All this leads to the entire kingdom hating on Naofume. Done with all the backlash, furious Naofumi sets out to get strong and return to his old world as soon as possible.
Similarities: The anime is somewhat similar as both are isekai genre with a troubled main character summoned to a different world with unfavorable circumstances. Both male leads face the harsh reality of the new world while adapting to it.
04. Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica (Puella Magi Madoka Magica)
Fourteen-year-old Madoka Kaname had a strange dream about a strange girl, a cat-like being, and a gigantic creature. The next day, she finds out that the girl in her dream is Homura Akemi, a new transfer student at her school.
Things get even weirder after Madoka, and her friend Sayaka encounters a strange cat-like magical creature called Kyubey. Kyubey offers Madoka and Sayaka to grant any one wish if they form a contract to become magical girls and fight witches.
Similarities: Both series contain similarities such as time travel and dark and supernatural themes. Protagonists in both the series struggle to save their loved ones from the adversities.
05. Akame ga Kill!
A countryside boy named Tatsumi sets out on a journey with his two childhood friends to the capital to make a name for himself. He hopes to earn money to save his impoverished village. But his life soon takes a dramatic turn when he becomes a victim of the bandit attack and gets separated from his friends.
In a chain of events, Tatsumi learns about his missing friends’ cruel fate from a seemingly dangerous group of assassins called Night Raid. After his encounter with Night Raid, Tatsumi joins Night Raid, the Revolutionary Army’s assassination branch, to help the nation get free from the kingdom’s tyrannical ruler.
Similarities: The series takes place in a fantasy world. The protagonist of the series is mediocre and weak but has many strong female characters as support. The anime starts with a fun adventure story but soon takes a dark turn, and it keeps repeating this pattern.
06. Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei (The Tatami Galaxy)
Watashi is a third-year student at Kyoto University who constantly worries about wasting his university days. Accompanied by his mischievous best friend Ozu, he desperately fights the course of his life, trying to get a girl and fulfill his dream of rose-colored campus life.
He joins a circle as a freshman but eventually becomes disillusioned when the activity does not lead to the ideal love life. He finally wishes to enter a different circle to start over. Soon as this thought crosses his mind, he is thrown back in time to the beginning of his college years.
Similarities: The main character goes back in time and gets stuck in a loop due to bad decisions, just like Re:Zero. Plus, the series has a pretty bleak comedic undertone if you are the mood for some dark comedy
