Deca-Dence is one of those series that fans would eagerly anticipate week after week, but can’t pinpoint exactly what made it so magically appealing. With a story and reminiscent features similar to most other post-apocalyptic anime, Deca-Dence lives up with its unique setting and character personalities. The sense of nostalgia that Deca-Dence induces is also remarkable.
Synopsis: In the near future, humankind was on the brink of extinction when air pollution was reaching lethal levels of contamination. The survivors built a 3000m-high mobile fortress called Deca-Dence to shelter themselves from unknown life forms called Gadoll. Residents of Deca-Dence fall into two categories: the warrior class known as Gears, and support class known as Tankers. The story follows Natsume, a tanker and an orphan who dreams of becoming a Gear herself and fight the Gadoll.
Although Deca-Dence’s action scenes are not so appealing, the story is still intriguing and well fleshed out. With its stunning world-building, Deca-Dence is set up to embrace a good story above every other post-apocalyptic anime. For an anime of its kind, there are no real downsides to watching Deca-Dence. Simon is a fourteen-year-old orphan who lives in Giha, an underground village, and digs ancient artifacts for living. He is friends with Kamina, who he greatly admires and calls him big brother. Kamina is a hot-headed rebel who dreams of going to the surface despite the village elder’s constant warnings.
On one fateful day, Simon discovers a strange drill-shaped key. Soon after, a gigantic robot came from the surface in response to the key and started attacking Simon’s underground village. To help save the village, Simon inadvertently activates a mini-robot with the key and somehow manages to defeat the enemy robot with Kamina’s help. So begins the fight of Simon along with others to regain control of the surface.

In a post-apocalyptic future, the emergence of giant beasts known as klaxosaurs led to humankind’s endangerment. It all happened when human civilization’s progress accelerated by ground-breaking discoveries in mining technology, allowing extraction of exhaustive energy sources from magma for a low cost.
The magma extraction eventually led to the sudden appearance of the klaxosaurs, which pushed humanity to the brink of annihilation. To fight against klaxosaurs, scientists created giant mecha known as Franxx and children as parasites. Young boys and girls born as parasites pair up and pilot Franxx to fight the attacking klaxosaurs.
Similarities: The monsters in the anime are a result of humanity’s greed for natural resources. The main characters do not know much about the monsters even though they are fighting with them for a long time. The history of the old human civilization is kept as a secret from the main characters.
3. Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan)
Centuries ago, humankind was slaughtered to near extinction by monstrous humanoid creatures called titans. Surviving populations secured themselves in a country surrounded by giant walls and lived in peace for hundreds of years. Eren Yeager lives with his adopted sister Mikasa Ackerman and his childhood friend Armin Arlert in the Shingashina District, surrounded by Wall Maria.
However, that peace shatters when a colossal titan breaches the supposedly impregnable outer wall. It’s 2071, and the world has been pushed to the brink of extinction by beasts called Aragami. An organization named Fenrir was formed to fight against Aragami with a group of special humans known as God Eaters. The God Eaters have the power to wield the divine weapons called God Arc.
Utsugi Lenka is a God Eater who can wield a new type of God Arc, which can switch between cannon and blade form. With the prowess of his new weapon, Utsugi joins one of Japan’s most formidable defense teams to eradicate the threat to humanity once and for all.
Similarities: The characters in the anime fight using weapons powered by their enemies’ bodies. The main character lost his family after a monster attack.
5. Black Bullet
The viral parasites called Gastrea were behind the destruction of the world. The parasites infect humans and turn them into monsters. The remaining of humankind took refuge inside Monolith walls made out of Varanium, a metal capable of subduing Gastrea. Soon it was discovered that cursed children born with the Gastrea virus have superhuman abilities. However, due to Gastrea’s intervention, the Cursed Children could only be female.
An organization was formed to fight against Gastrea. It paired cursed children known as Initiator with a Promoter to help lead them. Rentaro Satomi is a high school student and a Promoter in Tendou Civil Security Agency. He partners with an Initiator, Enju Aihara, to prevent the destruction of the Tokyo Area and the world.
Similarities: The main character lost his limbs after a monster attack, which led him to use prosthetic cyborg limbs. Only certain characters in the anime can fight against the monsters. The anime focuses on the story of defending the city from the monsters.
6. Houseki no Kuni (Land of the Lustrous)
Earth was struck six times by meteorites in the distant future, wiping out all humanity. Now a new species of crystalline organisms called Gems inhabit the world. Gems are immortal jewels with human-like emotions and appearance. All the Gems live together along with Kongou-sensei and have different duties and roles. The gems also fight against the Lunarians, a species who attacks them to abduct them and use their bodies as decorations.
Phosphophyllite, also known as Phos, is a young and fragile Gem with no job yet. While being useless and lazy, she still wants to help her friends in the battle against Lunarians. After receiving an assignment to create a natural history encyclopedia, she befriends Cinnabar, a smart colleague, and asks for her help. Phos wants to be useful to others, but she unintentionally ends up causing more trouble.
Similarities: The main character is naive, who jumps into a fight that she cannot win. The main character loses her limbs in the latter part of the story and uses prosthetic parts, which enhance her fighting skills.
